Borghese Villa and Park
The Borghese Gallery is a not to be missed sight!
The palace and the park were created by Pirro Ligorio for cardinal Scipio Borghese, nephew of pope Paul V, in the 17 C, to house the cardinal's impressive art collection with its world-famous pieces including sculptures by Canova and the largest collection of Bernini's statues; paintings by Raphael, Antonello da Messina, Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Rubens, Titian and the widest display of Caravaggio masterpieces. An unforgettable experience for art lovers!
The villa built outside Porta Pinciana in the 1620's, owned by the Borghese family for the three centuries that followed, was at first the cardinal's summer residence, place of delights and pleasures, to pass then to Prince Camillo Borghese who married Napoleon's sister, Pauline. It was only in 1901 that their art collection became state property.
The architecture of the Casino Borghese perfectly harmonizes with its surrounding gardens, where we'll walk to discover Rome's most beautiful city park. In 1901 it was acquired by the government of Italy and donated to the city of Rome. The panorama from the Pincio terrace offers a spectacular view of Rome.
