Gianicolo and Trastevere Walking Tour

Renaissance Fontanone on the Gianicolo hill
Gianicolo hill - piazza Garibaldi - Fontanone - Renaissance Tempietto - San Pietro in Montorio Church - Trastevere - Santa Maria in Trastevere Church
Stepping down from the Gianicolo, the highest hill of Rome, you'll plunge straight into the Medioeval quarter of Trastevere one of the most popular and beloved by the roman people

This tour crosses one of the oldest and still untouched roman neighborhoods, a charming and picturesque district where we can still enjoy the true flavors of Rome. In ancient roman times the area across the Tiber river was inhabited by the "non roman": Etruscan, Greek, Egyptian and Jewish merchants, so as the earliest Christian community, settled down here.

It was the only roman region across the river, where emperor Augustus built the naumachia: entertainment structure to house the naval battles.

In the medieval time the area was characterized by the many important basilicas and the strong personality of its’ inhabitants ‘the Trasteverini’ constantly arguing with the other Romans located on the other bank of the Tiber river.

We start from the top of the Gianicolo Hill, dedicated to the old god Janus, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Rome. The Gianicolo is also connected to one of the more important episodes of the Roman Risorgimento: the defense of the Roman Republic of 1849, when patriots led by Giuseppe Garibaldi fought an heroic battle against the French and Papal army. The memory of these lost heroes will accompanies us while we cross a romantic and charming park to arrive to the famous Fontain built by Pope Paul V Borghese one of the more spectacular Roman fountain.

A few steps ahead we find the jewel of the Roman Renaissance: the famous Tempietto of S.Pietro in Montorio, a masterpiece of harmony designed by Donato Bramante (first architect of St Peter Basilica).

We continue down the hill to explore the picturesque alleys of Trastevere. We’ll stroll around the labyrinth of medieval houses to reach the beating heart of the Trastevere   neighborhood the piazza dominated by the old basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and a jewel of the 12thcentury decorated with magnificent middle ages mosaics.

John and Judy Mihlik

Hello Ilaria. It is so nice that Richard provided your email for us. John and I had a wonderful experience having you as our guide. You have great knowledge and you are so enthusiastic. It takes much talent to get the group really listening. Just wish we could remember everything you said. I am in the process of sorting our photos but it will be a little while before I get them done as we took over 1,200. Since this was our first visit to Italy, we were so thankful to have you as our guide. The additional tours were very professionally carried out. We, also, would highly recommend your tour company to our friends.
