| Castelli Romani area - Grottaferrata - Visit to the Castel De Paolis Vinery |
From Rome we drive by limo to Grottaferrata where we stop to visit the Medieval Abbey of San Nilo. Along the way ruins of ancient Roman Aqueducts and remains of the Old Appian Way will be part of the landscape. On our arrival to the estate Castel De Paolis in Grottaferrata you’ll be offered a welcome cocktail.
Right after you will start The visit of the vineyard, followed by the tour of the cellar and the ancient Roman Cistern where the barrels of “Allier” are located.
A professional sommelier will lead you all along, illustrating the wine making process and the grapes varieties, as well as the phases of the wine tasting (wine color, scent, taste).
Lunch will be served in the dining room open onto a terrace overlooking the Alban Hills.
At your choice you might have:
1) A three courses lunch plus dessert, combined with three different wines;
2) Three wines degustation served with a light lunch.
If you like to buy wine from the estate, they can take care of delivery and shipping.
After lunch we might also visit some manufacture of local gourmet food producers ( like the “pasta” artisans). You will have an insight of how these special ingredients are prepared and why for us Italians food is a culture.
The Place and the Wine production
The area called Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) has been a vacation resort since ancient Roman times, and it’s since ever a famous site of vineyard growing.
We have chosen “Castel De Paolis”, a family-run vineyard, producing one of the best and most well known wines of our Region.
Set in a splendid isolation, high in the volcanic slopes of the Alban Hills, 750 feet above sea level, this vineyard is famous for the experiments done by Professor of Enology and Viticulture Attilio Scienza with local and international varieties of grapes, selected for their compatibility with the soil and climate.
The result is the creation of a new biologic FRASCATI DOC; the production includes seven different wines between red, white and rosé.
The estate, beside grapes, grows its own olive trees and vegetables .These fine ingredients are used to prepare the traditional dishes that will be served for lunch.
