On The Pilgrims Track: St. John and the Holy Stairs
All along the centuries Christian pilgrims have traveled to Rome to see the holy places. On the spurs of the early faithful you visit the Cathedral of Rome, St John in the Lateran, the Chapel of the Sancta Sanctorum and the Holy Stairs, mounted by Our Lord and spotted with his blood after he had been beaten in the palace of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem (pilgrims usually climb them on their knees).
Saint Helen, Constantine's mother, is said to have collected in Jerusalem several relics, so as pieces of wood and nails from the Cross and thorns from the crown of the Lord. They are preserved in the Chapel of the Relics in the church of The Holy Cross, raised by the same empress in the IV century.
