Coliseum and Imperial Rome
From the Colle Oppio, once seat of Nero’s Golden Palace (the Domus Aurea) our tour takes us down to the Ludus Magnus, the gladiators’ training ground. Here, we will listen to fascinating stories about their lives and fights. Next, we visit the Coliseum, where we will describe the performances of wild animals and gladiators and spectators’ reactions.
We continue our trip to the residence of the emperors by climbing the Palatine Hill. It was here that Romolus, the legendary founder of Rome, first made his home. At the top of the hill we come upon the powerful ruins of the Imperial Palaces, where roman power laid. From this spot , you will enjoy the view of the Circus Maximus, the largest hippodrome ever built in human history, where the legendary chariot races attracted hundreds of thousands of spectators. Our tour ends in the heart of the imperial capital: the Forum, where the destinies of the word were decided. Here was the centre of political power, here justice was administered, the gods had their temples and triumphal processions walked trough.
Across the modern Via dei Fori Imperiali, we can still admire the huge columns of the Temple of Mars, god of war, and the Markets of Trajan, the first shopping centre of all times.
